6 FAM 1541 OFFICIAL TRANSLATIONS BY THE TRANSLATING DIVISION, OFFICE OF LANGUAGE SERVICES (A/PRI/LS/T), AND THEIR CERTIFICATION

Only translations that the Translating Division, Office of Language Services (A/PRI/LS/T) makes and reviews or verifies, or outside translations that the Division verifies, are official Department of State translations. In order for a machine-generated translation to be considered official, it must be post-edited by A/PRI/LS/T. Such official translations may be certified for use as evidence in court, to satisfy the requirements of (regarding certification of the non-English text of a treaty or other international agreement translated by A/PRI/LS/T)or for other administrative purposes. Certification is accomplished when the Chief of the Translating Division issues a written statement that the English and other language versions are correct and complete to the best of the Chief’s knowledge and belief. In case of dispute about the office’s ability to certify a translation, the Director of the Office of Language Services makes a final determination, in consultation with the Chief of the Translating Division. Unreviewed translations are not certified; the Division may release them only with a heading stating that they are unreviewed and to be used for internal information purposes only. Bureaus and offices, other than the Office of language Services (A/PRI/LS), may provide translation services for themselves for internal information purposes. With the exception of translations done at post, or public diplomacy translations by R, such translations are considered informal products, and are not official translations of the Department of State, unless independent statutory authority exists. See 6 FAM 1511.1.
